The whole thing started because two professors in Auckland, New Zealand couldn’t afford the software they needed to teach an undergraduate statistics class.
They decided to build their own. They named it after their own initials, as a joke. Neither of them ever made a cent from it.
One of them eventually called his own creation a failure. The other left academia for Silicon Valley.
And the language they built? It’s now used by over two million people and has sparked one of the most vicious community wars in all of programming.
