It runs on the International Space Station. It powered the UK’s COVID-19 dashboard, processing 55 million data points a day. In the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, it’s the most popular, most loved, and most wanted database on the planet.
More than Oracle. More than MySQL. More than MongoDB. And the whole thing started because a professor who couldn’t write code got frustrated with his own creation, built a replacement, then abandoned it.
The project was rescued by two graduate students he nicknamed Grumpy and Sleepy. It was kept alive by a high school math teacher.
Its most important engineer was a man who had originally wanted to design pinball machines.
