The Tomb of Gilgamesh: What They Found Inside

In 2003, a German archaeological team announced they had located an ancient buried city beneath the Iraqi desert, preserved intact, with houses, gardens, canals, and on its edge, a structure matching the burial description in the Epic of Gilgamesh almost exactly.

The epic describes the oldest king in recorded history as two-thirds divine, the possessor of secret knowledge, who sealed everything he knew on a lapis lazuli tablet inside the walls of his city. Three weeks after the discovery announcement, the US invaded Iraq.

The excavation was abandoned. The tomb was never opened.
