As Voyager ages, every parameter of its components degrades: the transmitter weakens, the signal spreads across a vast distance, and the noise floor of the universe stays constant.

The power available to send data dwindles while the distance it must travel grows relentlessly.

The channel capacity of humanity's furthest outpost has been shrinking for decades, and it will keep shrinking until it hits zero.

What Ocker found was a signal at the very edge of detectability, squeezed through a channel already operating near its limit.
