Brew | The Darkest Moment in Asian TV History

August 23, 2010. 9:30 AM. Fort Santiago. Manila. The capital of the Philippines.

A tour bus belonging to Hong Thai Travel Services was about to depart with 20 tourists from Hong Kong, their tour guide, and four local Filipinos, all expecting to spend one last day in the country before flying home. But unfortunately, for some it would be their last day on Earth.

Just as the driver was about to close the door, a heavily armed man in a police uniform stepped inside, blocked the exit, and pointed his gun at the tour guide when she tried to raise the alarm. He ordered the curtains shut, then told the driver, at gunpoint, to drive.

As the bus rolled past the archway of Intramuros, the man turned to the passengers and said: "Sorry.. you are now my hostages.". What followed would be the most tense and chaotic 11 hours in modern Philippines history.

This video will lay out how the crisis unfolded minute by minute and document how the government and its law enforcement allowed it to end in a bloodbath broadcast live on tv for the entire world to see.
