Solve | The Kyshtym Disaster (1957)

The Kyshtym disaster, sometimes referred to as the Mayak disaster or Ozyorsk disaster in newer sources, was a radioactive contamination accident that occurred on 29 September 1957 at Mayak, a plutonium reprocessing production plant for nuclear weapons located in the closed city of Chelyabinsk-40 (now Ozyorsk) in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia in the Soviet Union.

This is a documentary about the Mayak nuclear plant. The Soviet Union’s first nuclear production facility and the source of several catastrophic disasters hidden from the world for more than 30 years. Though far less known than Chernobyl, the story of Mayak is equally disturbing.

The documentary tells the story of the Kyshtym explosion, the secret city of Chelyabinsk-40, the contamination of the Techa River and Lake Karachay, and the lives of the people whose futures were shaped by these events.
