The reclassification of Mimas represents one of the most significant shifts in planetary science in the last decade. It forces us to abandon the idea that we can judge a celestial body by its cover.

For the entire history of space exploration, we have prioritized targets based on surface activity. We followed the geysers and the cracks. We assumed that if a world looked dead, it was dead. Mimas has proven that this methodology is fundamentally flawed.

A world can look like a frozen, battered artifact of the early solar system and still harbor the conditions for life just a few kilometers beneath the dust.
