Thieves robbed a German bank during the Christmas holiday period, escaping with more than $10 million worth of cash and valuables, police said.
The suspects drilled into the vault of a Sparkasse bank in Gelsenkirchen and broke into several thousand safe deposit boxes, taking advantage of widespread holiday closures.
The crime was discovered after a fire alarm was triggered. Outside the branch, frustrated customers said they had received no information about whether their boxes were affected, with some reporting losses of retirement savings, cash, and jewelry.
