In 1950, the physicist Enrico Fermi asked a question no one has answered in 75 years. The Milky Way contains 400 billion stars.

Billions are older than our Sun. Habitable planets number in the tens of billions. The chemistry of life is everywhere. The math says the galaxy should be teeming with intelligent civilizations. But when we listen, we hear nothing. Absolute silence. Sixty five years of searching.

Millions of stars surveyed. Zero detections. Something is filtering intelligence out of the galaxy. Something is keeping the night sky quiet.

And the most disturbing possibility is that whatever stopped every civilization before us may not be behind us. It may be ahead.
