In early 2020, $35 million vanished after a single phone call that never happened. A trusted bank manager heard a familiar voice. The verification passed. The emails looked perfect. Every protocol was followed. And yet the money was gone.

This is the true story of one of the first known crimes executed with artificial intelligence, a heist where no criminal showed up, no weapon was used, and no law was broken in the moment it mattered most. A synthetic voice, trained on public recordings, replaced human trust and turned it into a weapon.

Seventeen people across multiple countries built the infrastructure. But the real thief was something new: an AI voice that didn’t exist, calling from nowhere.
