Johnny Harris | The Iran-Iraq War Mapped (1988)

The Iran-Iraq War wasn’t just a fight between two rival countries, both wanting the resources and power of the other.

This war reshaped the entire middle east, setting up a dynamic that persists to this day: Iran fighting for revolutionary change, Saudi Arabia fighting for the status quo, and both sides fighting through their neighbors and allies, making wars worse and creating instability in their wake.


The Iran- Iraq War began with the Iraqi invasion of Iran in September 1980. After eight years of conflict, both countries accepted a ceasefire deal brokered by the United Nations, which became effective in August 1988. The war caused around 500,000 deaths (excluding numbers from the related Anfal campaign), making it the deadliest conventional war ever fought between regular armies of developing countries.


On 20 July 1988, Iran accepted Resolution 598, showing its willingness to accept a ceasefire.
A statement from Khomeini was read out in a radio address, and he expressed deep displeasure and reluctance about accepting the ceasefire,


Resolution 598 became effective on 8 August 1988, ending all combat operations between the two countries.
