For decades, Gulf leaders believed their prosperity in energy and tourism was underwritten by an American security guarantee.

That illusion was shattered when a wounded Iranian regime enacted a prearranged doomsday plan, launching more than 1,200 missile and drone attacks in a week.

Mark Urban explores how this unwanted war has permanently eroded faith in Western protection, leaving the region to face a future of murderous hostility and economic vulnerability.
