A modern aircraft carrier is thrown back in time to 1941 near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Imagine if the United States Navy could fight World War II with modern technology. The Final Countdown (1980) explores the ultimate military "What If" scenario: A modern nuclear aircraft carrier travels back in time to the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The USS Nimitz is the most powerful warship in the world. While on routine maneuvers near Hawaii, the ship and its 6,000 crew members are engulfed by a strange electromagnetic storm. When the skies clear, they find themselves in calm waters... but something is wrong.

The radio is playing music from the 1940s. The Japanese Imperial Fleet is approaching on radar. And Captain Matthew Yelland (Kirk Douglas) faces an impossible choice: Does he use the immense firepower of a 1980s Supercarrier to destroy the Japanese fleet and save Pearl Harbor? Or does he let history take its course to avoid a paradox that could destroy the future?
