Pluto used to be written off as just a cold, frozen rock, orbiting out in the dark. But now we know it’s got an active atmosphere, surface cycles, a history of chemical change, and even interactions with its moon.

It’s complex. And that complexity tells us not to underestimate the quiet corners of the solar system.

The reason all this matters extends far beyond Pluto itself. Webb didn’t just update our map of a distant dwarf planet. It provided us with tools, examples, and comparisons that extend across the entire field of planetary science.

From icy moons around gas giants to faint exoplanets circling red dwarfs, the fingerprints we found at Pluto help decode what’s happening on other worlds, too.
