The song was written by Adams and his longtime collaborator Jim Vallance, and produced by Adams and Bob Clearmountain. "Summer of '69" is a pop rock and heartland rock track built around a prominent guitar riff.

Lyrically, the song reflects on nostalgic summertime and youthful romance, drawing inspiration from cultural events of the 1960s as well as Adams' and Vallance's early experiences playing in bands.
